Tips for those moving home
Getting ready to move and want to know how to make it work? Look no further - we have gathered and put together 7 moving tips to help you smoothly get through the hassle.
- Be organised and plan in advance
Moving home is exciting but it is also a very time-consuming and exhausting process. While caught in it, it is easy to forget something. So always have a plan and, as obvious as it sounds, adhere to it.
- Declutter
When moving, it is the best time to declutter and get rid of any unwanted old stuff that you have gathered throughout the years. Donate, recycle, throw away, or sell! By doing so you will not only reduce the number of items you need to bring into your new home but also reduce the transportation costs.
- Decide whether you need a removal firm
While some people may enjoy packing/unpacking their stuff, there are others who would rather delegate this matter to a professional. A removal firm can do both the packing and moving but also you can use it to transport the stuff you have already packed - and by doing so you may reduce the overall cost.
- Start the process early
Sorting and packing can be a quite long process so it’s always good to start as early as possible. Label the boxes so you know exactly where they go and the order your will be unpacking them in.
- Safety first
When packing and moving, don’t forget about the safety of those involved. Make sure the boxes are not overpacked - use smaller boxes and go lighter. When moving heavy objects, ask for help. Carefully pack dangerous items such as knives or gardening tools.
- Important documents
Place all of your important documents (passports, important paperwork, etc.) safe in one box or folder and keep it somewhere secure. You may also want to make digital copies of the documents just in case.
- Update the address and organise utilities
If you are afraid to miss incoming mail, you might want to set up the Royal Mail redirection service. Also, do forget to take final meter reads and let your utility companies know that you’re moving. You may want to update your record on the electoral roll, as well.
We hope you find our guide helpful and we wish you good luck at your new home!
